Barclays Outage Causes Major Banking Disruption Nationwide

Thousands of Barclays customers across the UK faced major banking disruptions on January 31, 2025, due to a widespread outage affecting mobile banking, online banking, and payment processing services. The issue, which began around 9 a.m. GMT, left users unable to access their accounts, make transactions, or receive payments.

Barclays Banking Outage Hits Customers at Critical Time

The outage came at an inconvenient time, coinciding with the UK’s self-assessment tax return deadline. Many customers took to social media to express frustration over failed transactions, delayed payments, and general banking issues. Some users also reported difficulties accessing essential services, raising concerns over Barclays' reliability.

Barclays Acknowledges Technical Issues, No Timeline for Fix

In response to the outage, Barclays issued a statement acknowledging the problem:

We're aware that some of our customers are experiencing technical issues using some features in our app, online banking, and with payments in and out of their accounts. We're sorry for this and are working hard to fix the problem."

Despite this acknowledgement, the bank did not provide a clear timeframe for when services would be restored, leaving many customers in uncertainty.

What Customers Should Do During the Barclays Outage

Barclays has advised affected customers to check their Service Status page for real-time updates and subscribe to notifications regarding service restoration. In the meantime, the bank recommends using ATMs or visiting physical branches for urgent banking needs.

Barclays Works to Restore Services Amid Customer Frustration

As Barclays continues working to resolve the outage, customers are encouraged to remain patient and use alternative banking methods where possible. The bank has assured users that its teams are actively addressing the issue to restore full functionality as soon as possible.

For the latest updates, Barclays customers should monitor the bank's official channels.

The Kajoku Team’s Recommendation:

If you rely on Barclays for important transactions such as paying staff, mortgages, rent, or other business-related payments, we strongly recommend notifying anyone expecting payments from you. This proactive communication can help manage expectations and avoid misunderstandings during the outage.
