Download your credit files to check your credit rating

You may be getting ready to buy your first property or your next investment property and are wondering how good your credit history and score are.

Lenders favour those with good credit scores because they are seen as having less of a risk to default on their mortgage payments. Despite this fact, there are a number of ways to improve your score, which will ultimately give you more options with lenders and occasionally better interest rates.

One of the things you can do is to regularly check your credit report so you can see what the lenders see (about your credit status) before they see it.

There are a number of credit report agencies, namely; Equifax, Experian, Transunion and Crediva, but the one that has data from all four Credit Reference Agencies is 'checkmyfile'. Check my file allows you to view your credit status across the four agencies, which means that you will not have to register with four agencies but instead with just one.

Another thing you can do is go through the entries on your credit file and make sure that there are no errors there.

For example; a mobile phone line you forgot to cancel because you got rid of the phone for instance.

Checking to see if you are registered on the electoral register at the correct address, can also affect your credit rating, correction of this can significantly improve your credit rating. You can also check that your credit card payments are up to date.

Be sure to remove any expired CCJ's.
